The Holy Week arrives in Girona with a set of celebrations and events that will take place between the Friday before Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday.
During these days, the Christian community remembers and recreates the last moments of the life of Jesus Christ on Earth: the Passion, Death and Resurrection. There are many, however, who enjoy the festive practices that take place through the streets of the city -processions, theatrical performances and other liturgical and ritual activities-, in which the brotherhoods become the protagonists.
The arrival of the first full moon of spring marks the entrance of this festivity and the beginning of the different outstanding acts:
This day commemorates the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. For this reason, the arrival of Jesus is staged with the raising of the palms and branches of olive and laurel. At 11 o’clock in the morning the Blessing of Ramos will take place. Next, it will be the turn of the Holy Mass, presided over by Bishop Francesc.
That same day at 6 o’clock in the afternoon, there will also be a concert of sacred music in the church of Mare de Déu dels Dolors.
From 8:30 in the afternoon, starting from the castrum of Sant Lluc, the armed will be responsible for making the delivery of the banner. During the way back, there will be an act of homage to the 75th anniversary of the Vestes de los Manaies. The Manipe band and the Costa Brava Orchestra will perform the marches of the Brotherhood.
In the silence of the streets of Girona, the processions begin, recalling the last moments of Jesus’ life. At 18:30 in the afternoon, the Manipulo Exit will take place, where the rock will be collected until reaching the Cathedral. Once the sky is dyed black, it will be the turn of the procession of the Holy Burial, which will end in the Cathedral. To conclude the day, the performance of honors to the Holy Cross will be done.
During the rest of the days there will be other festive activities, such as band concerts and concerts of sacred music. Also, you can visit the Exposanta, from 12 to 18 April, at the Església de la Mare de Déu dels Dolors.
